Fine Kanak O Kono Ceremonial Prestige Axe, New Caledonia. Carved stone, shells, trade cloth and fibre. Gi okono (axe), or Nbouet were among the most highly prized objects for the Kanak people of New Caledonia. They were used in ceremonies and as emblems in warfare, and served as symbols of individual chiefs. This particular axe has striking nephrite axe head fitted and tied to the baton and the fibre cords used to fix the stone are wrapped around the rod and extend to the base of the axe handle. The binding is very fine and blue trade cloth is used underneath the binding. A very fine example. Approx L64 x 23cm. PROVENANCE John Magers Collection, Sydney.
