WW2 Distinguished Flying Cross (1945), 1939-1945, Air Crew Europe (France and Germany bar), Burma Stars, Defence Medal, BWM and QEII Police Long Service Medal attributed to Flt Lt John Llewellyn Martin R.A.F.V.R. (John L. Martin on Police) good very fine and better, swing mounted as worn, except for Police LS which is in Metropolitan box of issue.
His DFC was announced in the London Gazette dated 22nd May 1945 with Buckingham Palace transmittal slip to Flight Lieutenant John L. Martin D.F.C.
With typed service details, enlisted 11/3/41 as Flt Mechanic, re-mustered as Sgt Flight Engineer 23/3/43, promoted Flt Sgt 1/1/44, commissioned 27/7/44, promoted Flg Off 27/1/45, Flt Lt 27/7/46, demobbed Nov 1946, joined Metropolitan Police 6/1/47, trained at Hendon, joined Chelsea Police Station April 1947, promoted Sgt and transferred to Hammersmith Police Station 20/8/56.
Sold with 2 RAFVR ID discs (No 177926), cracked photo in front of Blenheim bomber, Flying Log Book, 2 boxed silver 1949 Tug of War Medals (1 named J.L. Martin), Flight Engineer Notes for Lancaster, RAF Release Book, Veteran's Badge in box, 3 boxed sports medals, silver watch chain with broken compass attached, range of photos including wartime aircraft etc, newspaper cuttings, 2 large cases of masonic regalia with sashes, aprons etc.
His first Op was with 100 Sqn flying Lancasters to Dortmund 23/5/43, with further ops to Essen, Cologne, Turin, Berlin, Milan etc completing his 27th and last Op with the Sqn 22/10/43. His 2nd Tour was with 460 Sqn with his first Op to Rheydt 27/12/44 with his 20th Op 22/3/45. In may he was posted to No 1 Glider Pick Up Unit and qualified as a Glider Pick Up Winch Operator 22/5/45. Joined 194 Sqn flying Dakotas in Akyab 18/7/45, last flight recorded 18/3/46. The 1943 newspaper cuttings are about their Lancaster B2 which was late back from a raid on Leipzig, with an engine that had been on fire for 4 hours - "Over Germany, one engine seized and caught fire. The flames lit up the fuselage and tailplane and made the bomber an easy mark for fighters and anti-aircraft guns, but the pilot pressed on to the target." (See photo) (3B)
