A POW parcel postage receipt card addressed to Flight Lieutenant George Edward McGill (14 April 1918 – 31 March 1944), who was a Royal Canadian Air Force officer, the observer (navigator) of a Vickers Wellington bomber as part of 103 Squadron. The parcel receipt was written by his Mother on 24th June 1943. The receipt card was acknowledged "All Ok" and signed by George McGill.
McGill was taken prisoner after being shot down on 10th January 1942 during a bombing raid over Wilhelmshaven. A fire broke out on-board, McGill and 3 other crew members abandoned the Wellington and parachuted to safety, however his pilot and second pilot managed to put the fire out and land safely back in England.
McGill on landing was taken prisoner and took part in the 'Great Escape' from Stalag Luft III as the 'Deputy Security Officer' for the escape which took place in March 1944, but he was to be one of the 50 men shot by the Gestapo was one of the men recaptured and subsequently 'shot while trying to escape' by the Gestapo, he along with the others was executed on the personal orders of Adolf Hitler.
