Roger Casement trial. Great War 1914 Star to witness 4231. PTE. J. NEILL. R.IR.REGT.
Born in in Newtownbarry, (Bunclody), Co. Wexford, John Neill joined the 4th Battalion Special Reserve of the Royal Irish Regiment in Enniscorthy in 1911. He was mobilised on the 6th of August 1914 with the 4th Battalion and posted to France. On the 19th of October 1914, at the Battle of Le Pilly, he was wounded in the arm and taken prisoner.
Neill was imprisoned at Limburg Camp, where the Germans concentrated Irish POWs to facilitate Roger Casement in recruiting for his Irish Brigade. Neill witnessed this and recounted Casement’s activities in his POW statement following his repatriation in 1916 due to his wounds.
In Casement’s trial for treason, Pte 4231 John Neill was called as a witness for the Prosecution. In his testimony, he identifies himself clearly and states he saw and heard Casement recruiting at the Camp.
