“THE MINING JOURNAL & COMMERCIAL GAZETTE” conducted by Henry English Esq. Vol 1, No 1, Aug 29th 1835, a continuous run to end 1909, uniform modern cloth binding 1909-1935, then various uniform bindings to Vol 245 number 6279, 1955 (some numbers 1946–1947 original wraps unbound) includes Annual Reviews 1940, 1948-53. A well presented set. The significance of this body of work should not be underappreciated. A man of vision, Henry English, recognised that he was in exactly the right place at the right time and that the world, and indeed the mining community, was entering into a mining evolution. English foresaw that an independently owned and edited journal was necessary for the industry and helped galvanise ideas, information and studies throughout the world. This is reflected in the Journal successfully campaigning for the introduction of the first ‘Safety Regulations’ in 1844, the establishment of the ‘Royal School of Mines’ and ‘The Camborne School of Mines’. It is apt that this impressive collection has currently found its home in Cornwall. The importance of Cornwall to the development of mining is well-recorded through the centuries and came into its own during the Industrial Revolution. This is of course reflected by the Cornish people of the time, who took their hard earned knowledge and skills and spread it the world over to put them into practice. Indeed, reports contained in this vast collective body of work include detailed reports of the Cornish using their expertise in places such as Mexico, Nova Scotia, Brazil, Colombia, Ireland, England, Spain, Chile, &c. &c. in a hugely pivotal era of the world’s development (physically visible by the smaller presses of the War years). This continuous run is altogether large in scale, academic content and cultural significance. Profuse in advertisements, a contemporary encapsulation of global history, as seen through the eyes of the mining industry.
