A pair of cased 1930s 9ct gold full hunter pocket watches, by Rotherham’s London, each pocket watch with accompanying 9ct gold Albert chain, the pocket watches were presented to two brothers John Henry Langham and Archibald Langham for 20 years service with The Standard Engineering Co., both ending their loyal service in 1935, each full hunter pocket watch with white enamel dials, black hourly applied Roman numerals, minute track, subsidiary dial at six o’clock, blue steel hands, button wind movement, 9ct gold case and dust cover, engraved ‘John Henry Langham In Appreciation of 20 Years Faithful Service Completed With The Standard Engineering Co. Ltd April 1935’ and ‘Archibald Langham In Appreciation of 20 Years Faithful Service Completed With The Standard Engineering Co. Ltd March 1935’, each pocket watch is hallmarked 9ct London, 1934, maker’s mark R&S (Rotherham’s and Sons), each case diameter approximately 49mms, approximate weight of each pocket watch 84.1 grams and 83.2 grams, each watch is presented within the original fitted case, inner silk linings reading ‘Rotherham’s London’, each pocket watch is accompanied by a 9ct gold solid curb link Albert chain, each with T-bar and swivel clasp, one measuring approximately 46mms, approximate gross weight 47.8 grams, one measuring approximately 38mms, approximate gross weight 46.4 grams (suspending a bloodstone swivel fob hallmarked 9ct gold Birmingham, 1919) Rotherhams can trace its heritage back to 1747 as a world famous clock and watchmaking manufacturer. The main period of watch making was between the 1740s and 1920s. Historically, based in Coventry as an important centre of English watchmaking, major employer and manufacturer distributing all over the country and worldwide. Today Rotherham’s 1750 Ltd still manufacture superb time pieces in Coventry. In the late 1800s Rotherhams moved their headquarters temporarily to Holborn Circus, London, for this small period of time Rotherham pocket watches were marked ‘Rotherham’s London’, as seen with the full hunter pocket watch examples featured within this lot, The Rotherham & Sons maker’s mark, R&S can be seen to the inside case, the watch dial signed Rotherham London and the original fitted case inner silk lining reading; ‘Rotherham’s London’(Condition report: overall condition very good, pocket watch engraved Archibald has fine hairline mark to dial between seven and eight o'clock, both pocket watches currently functioning, pocket watches untested for time keeping, some jump rings to the Albert chains have worn a little thin, minor light scratches to pocket watches and Albert chains, in keeping with age and general wear)
