ITALY: VATICAN, PIUS IX, The Reconstruction of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside-the-Walls, a splendid large copper medal, 1854, by Ignazio Bianchi, bust of Pius IX left, wearing zucchetto and cope, reverse: the interior of the basilica in three-dimensional relief, 82mm, in red leather case of issue, the lid embossed in gilt with Papal Arms. Extremely fine & rare. Pius IX reconsecrated the basilica on 4 December 1854, after its restoration following a devastating fire in 1823. This is considered one of the most outstanding of all 19thC architectural medals.
