EARLY DATED 1781 JUG. 5.3ins tall. An important dark brown salt glaze jug by Robert Brettingham De Carle dated 1781. Hand thrown in the form of a hooped barrel, the handle realistically modelled as a branch attached by modelled straps - lower one bears the potters signature. Fine detailed high relief all over cornucopia, winged cherub below spout, cottage one side, family picnic to other, ears of wheat just above the foot. Raised letters & date below: D/ R A/ 1781. See Browne Muggs, p46, illus. 81, & Hildyard English Browne Stoneware p59, illus. 24. for similar - initials specifically name attributed. in each. An item quite above & beyond the usual we see in salt glaze. Robert Brettingham de Carle came from an East Anglian family of masons & sculptors & is believed to have worked for Mrs Coades stone factory in Lambeth. Very few of his wares re recorded, all characterised by the high quality relief modelling credited to have turned utilitarian stoneware into luxury products. There is a similar item in the Victoria & Albert Museum, minus the building vignette, & another in the Hampshire County Museum. A similar jug sold at Bonhams in 2016 for 3,500 inc. premium. With thanks to collector Neil Smith for additional information. Dudley Davidson base sticker. Minute old base & rim flakes.
