Attributed to George Frederick Watts (1817-1904) Portrait of a Lady, half length, wearing cap and shawl, initials etched lower left, oil on canvas, The painting is potentially an example of an early portrait by George Frederick Watts (1817-1904). The vendor received correspondance from The Watts Gallery regarding the painting who via photograph examination responded that the painting was possibly by Watts. The style of the painting suggests the portrait was painted circa 1840s, the Watts Gallery suggest that it would likely have been painted prior to the artist travelling to Italy in 1843. Watts' early works are not well documented and he rarely signed his paintings. There are examples for him initialling works GFW - there are similarities between the signature on this portrait and the Portrait of the Marquis of Dufferin and Ava which is a confirmed Watts piece.
