20th Century English School. Portrait of Sir Nicholas Crispe, 1st Baronet (c.1599-1666), Oil on canvas, Inscribed, 42" x 29" (106.7 x 73.7cm). Notes: A Royalist, Crispe was a wealthy merchant and large stockholder in the East India Company. He was elected into Parliament in 1640 to represent Winchelsea but his duties were short lived when he was expelled in 1641 for collecting duties on merchandise which he used as security to loan money to King Charles I without the authorisation of Parliament. He supported the King throughout the Civil War and was rewarded by being appointed to many prominent positions on the monarch's return. He was a member of The Company of Adventurers
