Military account book and Monthly Settlements Clothing Account book for Cornelius Turner (1834-1887), 94th Regiment of Foot, service number 3341. Printed in Calcutta (India) by O.T. Cutter - Military Orphan Press, 6 Bankshall Street, 1865. The account book states Cornelius Turner enlisted for a bounty of £4 15 shillings plus money for necessities in 1855 at Windsor aged 21 years. He was born in St. Georges, Southwark with a civilian trade of Gas Fitter. He is described as 5 foot 5 3/4" with blue eyes, brown hair and no marks. He landed at Gibraltar on 11th September 1855, landed at Cork on 27th July 1856, landed in the East Indies on 14th March 1858 and returned to England on 27th February 1868. His rank history is somewhat turbulent, being promoted to Corporal on 8th May 1857, reduced to Private 10th November 1857, Promoted to Corporal 10th November 1859, Promoted to Sergeant on 18th March 1861, reduced to Private 1st April 1862, Promoted to Corporal 22nd July 1864, reduced to Private 10th November 1863 and promoted once more to Corporal on 1870. He married Elizabeth Knight on 24th August 1871 in St. Luke's, London and had six children (of whom only three are listed in the account book). The account book includes his Second Class Certificate of Education, signed by Lieutenant-Colonel H.G. Buller, Commanding 94th Regiment, dated 1866. Some parts of the book are blank - e.g. Will. The clothing account section is completed from January 1866 to January 1876. Covers are much worn and dilapidated, some interior pages have been stabilised at the central folds.
