After Paolo Veronese (Italian, 1528-1588). Conquest of Smyrna: Pietro Mocenigo prepares the assault to take Smyrna from the Turks in 1472, sepia wash on toned laid paper, unsigned, framed, 13¼ x 21in. (round inverted corners matching the original ceiling painting). *After a section of the oil painting by Veronese on the ceiling of the Sala del Maggior Consiglio in the Palazzo Ducale, Venice which is comprised of thirty-five canvas panels. An engraving in the British Museum, circa 1720, shows that prints have long been available of this composition for copying purposes.
