ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER: (1900-2002) Queen Consort of King George VI. Personal letter to Sir Frederick Still, July 4th 1927. Two pages, four sides fully filled, by hand in black ink on notepaper with Elizabeth's personal cipher. On the 27th June 1927, the Duke and Duchess of York returned from an extensive tour of Australia and New Zealand. In this letter, written when the Queen Mother was still the Duchess of York, she expresses her most heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for Dr. Still's care of Princess Elizabeth, 'the baby' whilst she was away. "You have no idea what a vast relief it was to me, to know that you were visiting her, and that she was under your wing". The tour lasted six months and Dr. Still's regular letters to the Duchess with updates on her daughter, provided her enormous comfort and this is clearly expressed in this touching letter. She goes on to say "She is so well & happy & I have to thank you too for her health - I did so want her to be strong, it will be such a help to her" Given that Edward VIII's future abdication in 1936 would place Princess Elizabeth's father and then herself on the throne, these were profound words indeed.
