SCOTLAND: EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY, copper medal for Physics, awarded 1884-85 to J[ohn] W[att] Butters (1863-1946), arms, reverse: details, 52mm, in original case; Herriot-Watt College, Edinburgh, silver prize medal, 1896-97, for Masonry & Brickwork (Wm. Robertson), 46.29gms, 48.5mm; copper medal, similar, 1913-14, Mathematics (David Waddell), this in case of issue, extremely fine or better. (3) J Watt Butters graduated from Edinburgh with First Class Honours in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy and taught at George Heriot's School and James Gillespie's School in Edinburgh. He became Rector of Ardrossan Academy. Interestingly there were three David Wadells were killed in the First World War, Private 1651, 2nd Bttn. Black Watch (23 Nov 1914); Sapper 1346, Royal Engineers, 1st City of Edinburgh Field Coy. (16 July 1916); and S/14069, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 2nd Bttn. (30 August 1916), the last aged just 20.
