This scarce Scottish issue was only struck at the Edinburgh mint in the years 1601 to 1604. These coins date to the years immediately before James VI ascended the English throne as James I, uniting his two kingdoms in a personal rule. James' Scottish coinage, issued after the union of the crowns, shows the quartered arms of England, Scotland and Ireland, while these earlier hammered gold pieces show only the lion of Scotland on the obverse.
