A FINE GERMAN WILLKOMM HUMPEN

enamelled in polychrome with eight men with linked arms, their names in scrolls, flanking an armorial motto "Vivant alle weiss brecken in Lobenstein" and dated "Anno 1709", 18cm high x 12.5cm diameter

The motto can be translated: "Long life to all white bakers in Lobenstein", which is a small town in Thuringiawald, Germany.

Provenance: According to family records this rare toasting glass was discovered in the flower vase cupboard at Bethany, Sherborne, the home of great aunt Mrs M.P. Palmer.
