Two folding fans from the mid-19th century, the first quite large, the bone monture shaped with a high shoulder supporting a narrower than normal leaf, the sticks carved and pierced, some painted with roses, others with carved panels decorated in gold, the borders of all designs also gilded, the leaf showing a gathering in a park, musicians playing whilst young people meet for conversation and leisure, the verso with less detail to the sticks and depicting a family gathering outdoors for music and games, contained in a cream silk covered card Duvelleroy fan box, guard approx. 27cm; together with a bone fan of a similar period, the monture pierced and gilded, the leaf of cream silk, embroidered with gold sequins, the shaped and embossed metal loop fitted with a tassel of cream silk and gold thread, the verso is plain, guard approx. 27cm (2)

More Information

In some places the paint has rubbed on the first fan, mainly the guards. Damage to the tip of the lower guard and some slight splitting to folds. The leaf on the second fan is splitting on the folds, clearly valued as one fold has been hand-stitched!
