GB. COVERS & POSTAL HISTORY 1834 (20 Mar) letter from Francis Philips to the surveyor and superintendent of Mail Coaches, Charles Johnson. Francis Philips (1771-1850), a wealthy landowner and skilled road builder had built a new bridge over the Mersey, with eleven arches, an interesting letter includes "I request the favour of your perusal of a pamphlet that I have been driven I may almost say by the very injudicious recommendation of the Lords committee on roads to publish in defence of Turnpike securities…". Interestingly Johnson had been alongside the Prime Minister, Spencer Percival on 11 May 1812 when he was shot and soon after he died in Francis' arms. From the Herbert Joyce (third secretary, Post Office) family archive, author "The history of the Post Office", much additional information including a full transcript accompanies. Lot 1438 (M) [c]
