George Louis Palmella Busson du Maurier (Franco-British, 1834-1896) Boulevard scene with fashionable figures and a couple conversing, the lady seated in a bath chair likely an illustration for Punch signed du Maurier lower right, with printed dialogue label to reverse brown ink on paper 13 x 20.5cm. Provenance: Private collection Acquired by the present owner at J S Maas & Co, London circa 1970s/80s, and bearing gallery label to reverse George du Maurier studied chemistry as a young man, but soon abandoned this pursuit in favour of illustration. He joined the staff of Punch in 1864, and became renowned for his cartoons satirising Victorian society. The Bath Chair and Bath chair-men, which are featured in the illustration presented here, make several appearances in his cartoons. Du Maurier was the grandfather of novelist Daphne du Maurier.
