* This subject, copied from Raphael's similarly-sized composition (c.1504, New York, Metropolitan Museum), was apparently given by the artist to his friend, Dr. John W. Ogle, in 1882 (this information was incised upon a wooden box that once contained this picture, now lost, but recorded upon a modern handwritten label verso). Presumably Richmond had access to the original when it was in the esteemed picture collection of the `the richest heiress in England`, Angela Georgina Burdett, later Baroness Burdett-Coutts (1817-1906). *CR Some fine craquelure; needs a light clean.
