£2,500 - £2,800
1842 (Nov. 14) Entire letter from Sheffield to Wath near Sheffield bearing a 1d black, FI plate 9, the stamp partly torn away at left in an apparent attempt to remove the red cancel, the stamp still applied but recognised as a previously used stamp, endorsed "old stamp" (tying the stamp to the letter) and charged 2d, strangely without any backstamp. An unusual unsuccessful attempt at a postal fraud. With Brandon Certificate (2007). Photo on Page 8.
