CANADIAN INTERIM + EARLY U.P.U.-MEMBERSHIP PERIODS - SCOTTISH UNDERPAID MAIL; 1875/6 covers (4) all ex Scotland to mainland Canada; the first two from the very brief 'Interim Membership Period' (1 July - 30 Sept. 1875) - 31 Aug. 1875 env. with 2½d Rosy-mauve tied by Glasgow duplex but still subject to the pre-UPU 3d rate (until 30 Sept.) and so marked "INSUFFICIENTLY/PREPAID" & charged "3½" (½d underpaid + a whole 3d fine!) which converted to "7[c]" (rare thus), and 9 Sept. 1875 env. to Toronto "Per Cunard Steamer" (interim 4d rate) with 3d Rose-red tied by Oban duplex marked "INSUFFICIENTLY/PREPAID" as above ½oz and also underpaid (charged 1d underpayment + 4d extra rate + 3d fine!). The others, 17 Aug. 1876 & 14 Oct. 1878, ex Greenock/Fochabers both prepaid 2½d but marked "INSUFFICIENTLY/PREPAID" or "T " (unusual sanserif type - Glasgow?). Rare group from the early UPU period.
