A George Jones majolica sardine dish and cover, mid 19th century, of rectangular form, the dish relief moulded with a continuous foliate frieze against a puce ground below a yellow corn ear rim, the cover modelled with three sardines to form a handle, the dish with raised twin lobed maker's cartouche to base (used c1861-1873), 14.5cm W x 12cm D x 8.5cm H; with a white glazed stoneware cheese bell relief moulded with ferns and foliage, 29cm high (at fault) (2)
The sardine dish shows the odd firing pit and frit, the odd small glazing fault, fine surface crazing, and fine surface wear throughout. The cover shows a curved hairline crack approximately 7cm long to one corner.
