A JAPANESE MEIJI PERIOD BRONZE OKIMONO OF KINJIRO NINOMIYA BY HIDEYAMA, late 19th century, typically depicted as a boy carrying a bundle of sticks and walking while absorbed in his reading, the book he holds incised with a passage from the Daikoku (Great Learning), one of the Four Books of Confucianism. Raised on a circular base and signed Shuzan/Hideyama at the rear, height 31 cm x depth 18 cm x width 13 cm, 3.6kg
Ninoyama Sontoku (1787-1856), also known as Ninoyama Kinjirō, was a famous agriculturalist, philosopher and economist. Statues depicting him as a boy studying are often seen near Japanese schools.
Some small patches of corrosion to the bundle of sticks where the coating has not fully covered all edges and perforations.
