Clare WHITE (1903-1997) Monastery of Monreale Cathedral, Palermo Watercolour, 38 x 51cm. St Ives artist Clare White loved to travel and to paint. Across Europe and beyond, she would set up her easel in a hidden spot, take out her watercolours and paint in some of Europe’s most beautiful places, always capturing the grandeur of the architecture or landscape as well as the intimacy of people’s interactions within that place. Her excellent draughtsmanship and ability to portray human expression with a few simple stokes, give an absorbing quality and real depth to her illustrative paintings. This painting features a boy below the mosaic-decorated columns of the cloisters at Monreale’s beautiful multi-cultural-style cathedral in Sicily, while monks walk by. It embodies Clare’s talent for capturing a moment in time and place.
