George Turner the Elder (British, 1752-c.1820) A gentleman and his dogs in a stable oil on canvas, relined on original stretcher with later transposed inscription verso, 'paintd by G. Turner 1801.', in (possibly original) Carlo Maratta frame 27½ x 35½in. (69.75 x 90.25cm.) * Ellis Waterhouse in his Dictionary of British 18th century Painters refers to George Turner as a "Painter of portraits and fancy subjects. Born 1 June 1752; last recorded in 1820. Entered RA Schools 1782. Exh RA 1782, 1790-1813; BI 1807-20. Portraits of two of his children (born 1777 and 1784) were engraved with a dedication to CJ Fox. He ran a drawing academy". Benezit records that he painted portraits, history subjects, genre scenes and landscapes.

More Information

*Well restored and relined. Canvas remains well stretched. Frame has some restoration and repainting and minor losses. Some scattered small retouches and some strengthening to the black fur on the central dog. Larger retouched patch to left of gentleman's hat and in two small patches at top of door frame, plus two others to background. Some more extensive retouching to the centre of the canvas in the darker brown background area, which is largely concealed by blocking varnish. Not signed to front. Inscription verso was probably transposed from original canvas during relining.
