NAVAL INTEREST: AN EARLY 19TH CENTURY HORN SNUFF BOX

the white metal oval cartouche mount with shaped border and engraved 'HM CALLIOPE', the box 2cm high x 8cm wide x 4.5cm deep; together with two Victorian copper circular salts each with pierced bands of sunflowers and stamped 'From Old Foudroyant', 3cm high x 4.5cm diameter, with blue glass liners (3)

Note: The inscription to snuff box cartouche may related to HMS Calliope, a Cherokee-class brig-sloop of the Royal Navy, launched in 1808. She operated primarily in the North Sea where she captured numerous small merchant vessels and one French privateer. She also was present at the battle of Lake Borgne, near New Orleans. She was broken up in 1829. The stamps to salts may relate to HMS Foudroyant an 80-gun third rate of the Royal Navy, one of only two British-built 80-gun ships of the period (the other was HMS Caesar). Foudroyant was built in the dockyard at Plymouth Dock (a.k.a. Devonport) and launched on 31 March 1798.[b]Foudroyant served Nelson as his flagship from 6 June 1799 until the end of June 1800. She was broken up in 1897.
