scratch-inscribed in red lettering HIS MAJESTYS SHIP / RAMILIES [sic] / LOST WITH ALL HANDS / IN THE GREAT / HURRICANE / 1782 over a fouled anchor and cable, with coloured depiction of ship foundering to front -- 5in. (13cm.) high
Ramillies (74) was escorting a convoy from Jamaica when she was stricken by a storm that lasted three days from the 16th of September 1782. Despite ditching all her cannons, anchors, and masts, she foundered - but, contrary to the inscription, the crew were saved and her Captain Sylverius Moriarty, set her ablaze as the last man to leave.
