A mid-18th century oak longcase clock, 24cm square brass dial inscribed John Pettit, Chipping Ongar, silvered chapter ring with Roman and subsidiary Arabic numerals, twin-winding holes, eight-day movement striking on a bell, the case with pagoda cresting above a frieze of blind fretwork, arched rectangular door to waist, shaped apron, bracket feet, 212cm high John Pettit was the younger brother and successor to his brother Richard Pettit, to whom he was apprenticed 1774-1781, after which he was active into the early 19th century. His brother, in his turn, had been apprenticed to Thomas Knight of Thaxted 1767-1774.
