Cecil Johnson was born on 13/10/1914 at Harlesden, Middlesex and enlisted into the 1st Battalion East Surrey Regiment on 25/09/1933 with whom he served in India and Sudan before the war and then with the BEF in France until evacuated from Dunkirk on 31/05/1940. He transferred to the Royal Signals on 19/02/1941 and later served with the 50th Northumberland Division in N Africa and with the 51st Highland Division in North West Europe after D-Day. He was finally discharged on 05/06/1956 after 22 years service.
He qualified for the LSGC in 1952 as a Signalman and this was finally awarded in 1955 (AO 13/55 List no 25/55) by which time he was a substantive Corporal. This is
an example of the EIIR first type LSGC (ELIZABETH II D G BR OMN REGINA F D obverse) which is relatively scarce compared to the more common second type.
With copy of full service record for this old soldier who, during his service, was evacuated from Dunkirk, and later fought at El Alamein in North Africa and with the
iconic 51st Highland Division in Normandy, at the Rhine crossing and on to the final defeat of Germany in 1945.
