An original Christmas card sent from Oflag IX-A/Z (9A/Z) POW camp in Rotenburg, Germany during WW2 from Lieutenant Hubert Nicholle of the Royal Guernsey Militia (Prisoner No. 16420) to V.H. Coysh Esquire.

In 1939, Lieutenant Hubert Nicholle traveled to England to join the Hampshire Regiment. He agreed to return to Guernsey aboard the British submarine H43, and on 7 July 1940, successfully conducted a reconnaissance of German defenses on the island in preparation for Operation Ambassador. He was picked up on 10 July. During a second mission on 3 September 1940, he and fellow Guernseyman Lieutenant James Symes, disguised in civilian clothing, were left stranded when their extraction plans failed. With the help of Ambrose Sherwill, they obtained Guernsey Militia uniforms and, rather than being executed as spies, were captured and treated as prisoners of war. Nicholle was later awarded the Military Cross for his actions.
