LONDON P.O. FREE LETTER REF. INDIAN OVERLAND MAIL ALMOST ROUTED VIA FALMOUTH IN ERROR FOR MALTA; 7 Mar. 1835 EL (some minor closed tears inside) with "O.H.M.S./General Post Office" imprint on the front sent within London from "F. Freeling" (Secretary of the British P.O.) though franked by "Tho. Lawrence" on the front, having a mainly very fine rare octagon-framed crowned London Local Post "To be/delivered/Free" mark (filing fold) on the front. The letter concerns a complaint "in regard to your India Letter" that had been specially endorsed by the addressee to go "via Malta & Egypt" which was initially mis-sorted to go by the Falmouth route (but was spotted in the P.O. and correctly sent via Malta). A rare insight into the care taken in London to ensure that the first Overland Mails to India were not delayed.Cross Reference: FREE MAIL, LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, MALTA
