Two interesting Crimean War letters, written during the Siege of Sebastopol (Oct 1854 - Sept 1855), headed "Camp Before Sebastopol" and dated 22nd June and 8th July 1855, written by Gunner George Cook, Royal Artillery, the first to his father and mother, the second to his sister. In the letters George Cook describes the laying of the guns, the forming of new batteries of heavy guns and mortars, the effects of the Russian grape shot, numbers killed and wounded, a heavy thunderstorm at Balaclava which washed away tents and trenches and drowned two men, and at one point "I went down to Balackava when Lord Raglan our Commander in Chief was conveayed on board of ship, there was 50 men from each Regiment for this purpous, this was a very grand turnout" (sic). The final page over written at right angles. Basically GC and legible (creased with some staining, the second with some tears along the creases). Well worthy of being deciphered and transcribed. £75-100
