£900
Zululand. 1891 Partly printed soldiers cover "From No. 1306 Pte Pearce, 1st Battn. The Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment)" to another soldier in the regiment at Pietermaritzburg, bearing an uncancelled Zululand 1d postal fiscal, disallowed with a "2d" charge mark alongside, backstamped at Durban (Apr. 18) and Pietermaritzburg. Also an 1891 (June 27) printed proclamation (torn) authorising "Natal Revenue" 1d stamps overprinted Zululand to be valid for postal use. At least three soldiers letters are known from April 1891 with these 1d stamps disallowed and 2d charged; the troops objected and demanded their money back leading to a dispute between Zululand and Natal authorities, and the eventual issue of this proclamation authorising their postal use. An exceptional pair. (2). Photo on Page 84.
