MANUSCRIPT SHIPPING LOG OF A S MORRIS: 3 volumes 1926-29, ms diaries covering journey aboard Royal Navy vessel HMS Veronica on Southern Pacific station, visiting New Zealand, French Polynesia, Fiji and Samoa: they visit Bora-Bora, 'a most godforsaken spot', then Papeete, 'extremely squalid, particularly in the Chinese quarter'. Before arriving at Moorea which does at least meet with Morris's approval, 'a gem of the Pacific'. A few days later arriving at Penrhyn, northernmost of the Cook Islands, 'the centre of the pearl diving industry'. En-route to the Solomon Islands they change course when news comes of unrest...'the natives there are still wild and cannibals, they massacred two whites and fifteen native police last week...'. At the end of October, they arrive at Auckland and remain there for the next year..'the New Zealand cities haven't got much to offer to a visitor in the way of attractions': 3 volumes, small format diaries, two in green cloth and one in red, overall handling wear but generally in good condition.
