Edward Topham (1751-1820) - Jedidiah Buxton, full-length profile portrait, aged 63, signed and dated 1770 within the plate, ancient Greek epitaph from John Tzetzes' Chiliad I: 275, etching, trimmed, 25 x 16.5cm

Jedidiah Buxton (1707-1772), though born unlettered in Elmton, Derbyshire, developed and found fame as a mental calculator and savant. In 1754 his mental acuity was put to the test by the Royal Society, - who subsequently presented him with a handsome gratuity - and while in London, which he had walked to, he was taken to Drury Lane to see Shakespeare's Richard III; where his whole mind was given to the counting of words uttered by David Garrick.
