Clara Maria Pope (British, circa 1767-1838) A botanical study of morning glories, with a ladybird initialled C M P lower left watercolour 33 x 25cm; together with eight further botanical studies attributed to the same hand, including peonies, pinks, roses, and others, watercolours, each 15 x 10cm (sight) Provenance: By repute, given to the present owner's ancestors by Thomas Clark Brettingham Jnr (1822-1882) of Essex, grandson of Clara Maria Pope. Clara Maria Pope, whose first husband was the artist Francis Wheatley, started her career as a miniature painter, but is best known today for her fine botanical illustrations such as the ones presented here. Her illustrations feature in Samuel Curtis's Beauties of Flora, 1806-1820.
