ON OVERSEAS MAIL - TO GB "OVERLAND VIA CEYLON"; Attractive 10 Mar. 1851 E (family contents; folds neatly internally reinforced with archival tape) from Mahebourg to Essex endorsed "By overland via Ceylon" with very fine matching blue boxed "PAID." (beside ms "2/4d" - the outgoing Ship Letter rate) and "MAHEBOURG/MAR 1851" marks nicely placed on the front. Sent to Ceylon to connect with the P&O service to Suez, and then via Malta and Marseilles;; "2/3" rate charged to above ½oz "4/1" rate. Rare usage of village markings on overseas mail.
