Whilst dinner and tea plates are occasionally found, platters or serving dishes of this size are a significant rarity. The Herculaneum Pottery was established at Toxteth, Liverpool, circa 1793/94. Initially, it produced transfer-printed earthenware, but rapidly expanded into creamware and porcelain, and made many pieces for the American market. It is recorded that the factory was enlarged in 1806, most likely to cater for the booming market in Nelson commemoratives.
