£750
Pair of George II cast silver candlesticks, by James Gould, circa 1745, with removable foliate cast nozzles, over a multi knopped stem on a scrolled foliate shaped square base, engraved with a crest conforming to that on the nozzle, height 22cm
NB: A similar pair of candlesticks was sold as part of the Geoffrey and Fay Elliott Collection by Messrs Rosebery's, London, November 2022 (hammer price £1500)
Overall these sticks are in good condition, taking into account age and general use. The nozzles have some dents and splits to their bases. Both are engraved with a matching crest and maker's marks. There are pinprick dings throughout, especially around the base. These are visible but minor in comparison to the overall condition. Both sticks had shellac filled bases when they arrrived. You can see from the extra images that a steel rod core is still present. The marks are on the underside of the base. Both sticks stand vertical and one would stand flat on its base but for the steel rod on which it currently pivots. One of the sticks has some small cracks at the join between the stem and the base (we have attempted to take an image of these).
