Scottish. Highland Light Infantry attributed Officer's 1895 silver plaid brooch. A fine Birmingham hallmarked (V) example by J & Co (Jennens) . Quoit with engraved edge mounted with thistle wreath bearing 28 battle honours to TEL EL KEBIR. To the centre, a cut silver Star of the Order of the Thistle; mounted on the Star a curled bugle horn with gilt Imperial Crown, HLI, ASSAYE scroll and Elephant. Original stout pin to reverse which is engraved Hervey R. Bruce Esq. H.L.I. VGC Sir Hervey Ronald Bruce (1872-1924), 5th Baronet of Downhill; J.P., D.L., Co. Londonderry. Educated at Eton; 1890-92 2nd Lieutenant in 24th (Post Office) Middlesex Rifle Volunteers; HLI 7th Dec 1895; 15.8.1900 one of the initial Officers of Irish Guards, promoted Captain; Major 14th (Young Citizens) Bn. Royal Irish Rifles; served in S. Africa, 1899-1902 in Irish Guards as Transport Officer, South African Field Force. Commander (1st Regiment of Herveys Volunteers) Derry Regiment UVF 1912-14.
