Militaria: Two RAF Officers Mess shields, bearing the insignia of the Royal Air Force Liaison Party and Royal Air Force Strike Command. Each 6'' wide. Strike Command (now Air Command) HQ is located at RAF High Wycombe in the quiet Chilterns village of Walter's Ash, the base secretly established in 1936 to house Bomber Command HQ. Formerly codenamed 'Southdown', the station's buildings and infrastructure were designed to resemble benign village structures (the Officer's mess, from which this shield originates, was built to appear from the air as a Georgian manor house.) During WWII, Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur ''Bomber'' Harris masterminded the allied bombing strategy from his office at Bomber Command HQ. During the Cold War, RAF High Wycombe hosted the United Kingdom Warning and Monitoring Organisation (forewarning of nuclear attack), and later became Headquarters Allied Forces North Western Europe of NATO.
