Henry Robins, British (1820 - 1892)"H.M.S. Galatea," O.O.C., depicting a Royal Navy three mast ship Ariadne Class 26 - gun sixth fate screw frigate, on rough seas with icebergs in the distance, approx. 46cms x 76cms (18" x 30") signed lower right with inscribed gilt mount and oak frame. (1)úHMS Galatea was a 26-gun wooden screw frigate, launched in 1859 and broken up in 1883. Beresford joined her as a lieutenant in October 1868, when she toured the world under the command of Queen Victoria's son Prince Alfred. He had amazing adventures in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Japan (where he got tattooed and witnessed executions - six decapitations and a crucifixion), China (where he bought a servant named Fat Tom), Manila, Cuba, and the Falklands (where he saved a man's life). While in Hawaii he again met Nancy Sumner and proposed to her, but she prudently declined his offer. Shortly after Galatea's return to Plymouth, Beresford was appointed chief of staff to Admiral Sir Henry Keppel.
