Cuba History - Slavery - China - Ship Manifest - very rare listing of Chinese 'coolies', signed up as indentured laborers in their quest to escape the hardships of China and many of whom would become enslaved. The document begins "Lista de los colones que fueron embarcados en China...", with the name of the French ship on which they were transported ("barca francesa") Ephrem filled in, the captain Boucand. The Chinese name of each passenger is given, and the Christian name they were given is also shown, this is in addition to age and sex shown. Seven of the coolies have an X next to them, with the word "Fallecio" (died) written in the column headed Defuncion (deceased). Most poignantly, one Chinese passenger, given the Christian name of Angel, was one of those who passed away. Listed numbered up to 285. Last paged signed in script and dated, Habana 1867. Tears to pages, text still legible, 8 pp., printed forms filled out in ink, 33.5 x 22.5 cm (131/4 x 83/4")
