Militaria: Early aviation photo album Shoreham 1913/14 Flt Sub. Lt Herbert Rutter Simms, No. 1 Wing RNAS
An early 20thC photograph album, containing 19 monochrome photographs of pre-WWI aviation subjects, Avro biplanes and monoplanes (including the dual rudder 'Burga') at the company flying schools at Brooklands and Shoreham. Two examples depict Simms' aircraft / planes parked on the beach at Worthing, where he flew to lunch with friends.
Herbert Rutter Simms was a British aviation pioneer, born at Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire in 1891. He designed and built his own experimental aircraft before beginning an apprenticeship at A.V. Roe, Manchester in 1909, becoming a test pilot and Chief flying instructor. He moved on to Sopwith before joining the Royal Naval Air Service in 1915, and was shot down and killed over the Belgian coast the following year, aged 24.
