** CHATHAM (PRISON SHIP 'ROCHESTER') - LETTER EX FRANCE TO P.O.W. BUT HELD IN PARIS P. O.'s "CABINET NOIR"; Fine 3 Dec. 1806 EL (unsealed; family news etc from the addressee's mother) from "Lannion" addressed to; "Pierre La Maal, Prisonnier de Guerre a Bord du Ponton Le Rossester a ... par Calais...Chatam" with fine "P.21.P/LANNION" on the front beside a fine red Paris "P.P.P.P." and with "10" prepaid rate on reverse, but clearly never delivered. Letters posted soon after Napoleon's suspension of Mail exchanges (from 21 Nov. 1806) are thought to have remained in the Paris P.O.'s Secret Office ("Cabinet Noir").
