Originally published by Longmans in 1939, At Swim-Two-Birds was a commercial failure with less than 240 copies sold by the outbreak of the war. Additionally, the Longmans London premises and all unsold copies with it were destroyed by the Luftwaffe in 1940. The book did achieve considerable critical acclaim and it was with the publication of this edition by MacGibbon & Kee in 1960 that it achieved its just fame.
