William Wood First World War death penny contained in card sleeve together with commemorative scroll for HMS Gurka and medals to include: 1914-1915 Star, 1914-1919 Victory Medal and 1914-1918 British War Medal together with Certificate Of Service in the Royal Navy, Certificate Of The Inspector of Seamans Wills, Naval Prize Bounty Certificate for the Death of German Submarine 4315 for the sum of one pound 4 and 10 and a letter addressed to Margaret Wood informing of the regret to inform that the HMS Gurka sunk on the 8th instant and that William Wood rating Stoker 1st Class Official No. K5936 who is believed to have been on board does appear in the list of survivors along with other First World War related items. William Wood born 5th of January 1892 lived at Newark and worked as an agricultural labourer, joined the Navy April 10th and served as a stoker. He served on HMS Superb 1910-1913, Bellerophon Class Dreadnaught Battle Ship and HMS Gurka 1914-1917 Tribal Class Destroyer Dover Patrol. Died on 8th February 1917 when HMS Gurka struck a mine laid by U-boat UC47 off of Dungeness. Only 5 survivors from the ships company and is commemorated at Portsmouth Navy Memorial Newick War Memorial
