Sealed in an NGC holder with an old-style label (#1746467-002).California Fractional Gold pieces or 'Cal Fracs' date from the height of the California Gold Rush, which kicked off in 1848 when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill. The region's population increased rapidly in the following years, allowing California to become a state in 1850. Jewellers and businesses in the Old West struck these coins from locally mined gold well into the 1880s, imitating the gold currency being struck in the Eastern part of the US. Cal Fracs often display an Indian Head or Liberty Head design and come in round or octagonal shapes like this highly graded 1854-dated 25¢ piece.
