A TRANSFER PRINTED CREAMWARE JUG WITH H.M.S. AGAMEMNON AND THE GREAT EASTERN / LEVIATHAN,19TH CENTURY


one side with H.M.S. Agamemnon inscribed Agamemnon 91 guns, and the other with the Great Eastern under sail and steam inscribed The Great Eastern "Leviathan", the shaped lip with scrolling rope and acorn border on exterior and interior, handle with similar twisted rope decoration -- 7½in. (19cm.) high




Produced to commemorate the first transatlantic submarine telegraph cable. The Agamemnon, Lyon's flagship during the Crimean War, made the first unsuccessful attempt in 1858, and the cable was laid successfully by the Great Eastern (originally Leviathan) in 1866.
